Required Reading: Naomi Klein’s This Changes Everything

If you read only one book this year, please let it be this one. This Changes Everything is so large in scope and ambition that it is difficult to succinctly describe, but those familiar with Klein’s work will recognize her method from previous books–to take a scourge–“the fiction of perpetual growth on a finite planet”–trace its origins, then chart a course of liberation. The facts are grim when it comes to climate change and Klein doesn’t shy away from the data, but she makes a compelling argument that climate change is less an issue of carbon and more an issue of capitalism. She reframes the argument around the climate issue and then suggests that we have the power to change things. She sets the course for a counter-revolution–one that changes economic norms and ethical perceptions at once–and she reminds us that change is already happening in this regard–a climate justice movement is spreading–and we all need to be a part of it with (to quote Tim DeChristopher) “joy and resolve.” Read this book. Believe. Change or be changed. Read more here
